Lights On: Celebrating Before and Afterschool Programs at GPS

Outside of normal school hours, some students and staff are on campus for before and after-school programs that help students learn and grow outside of the classroom. Every October, the nation celebrates these programs with Lights On Afterschool, a yearly event organized by the Afterschool Alliance to recognize the impact that before and after-school programs have on students, families, and communities. For Gilbert Public Schools, Lights On Afterschool is a celebration to recognize our dedicated staff for their commitment to providing safe and engaging environments while also applauding the students who actively learn, grow, and thrive in these programs.

To celebrate Lights On Afterschool, many of our elementary schools hosted glow-in-the-dark parties as a way to keep the lights on while ironically turning the lights off. These events included students from the various before and after-school programs available across GPS. From the recently awarded and accredited Very Important Kids (VIK) Club to Gilbert Youth Athletics (GYA) and specialized Enrichment Classes, these programs allow students to discover new talents and build critical skills outside of school hours that support their learning in the classroom.

At Gilbert Public Schools, our commitment to students doesn’t stop after the school bell rings. Our goal is always to provide our students with quality programs before and after school, so they have space to learn and grow.

Over the years, students have grown to love their out-of-school programs, with some students feeling a sense of security and belonging in them. While at an afterschool program, one fifth-grade student shared that her favorite part of the program is knowing she has “a safe place to go where she can simply hang out and be a kid” with friends. Another fourth grader expressed his excitement about being able to meet new students and help them feel welcome. He also enjoyed the responsibility given to him by staff as the person to welcome all new students to the program.

Gilbert Public Schools is committed to providing students with high-quality programs, even outside of normal school hours. As we conclude this year's Lights On Afterschool celebration, we thank our dedicated staff for their commitment to safety and enrichment. Their work helps support students holistically to build a strong foundation for academic success.
